Drop the "I have to get in shape so I can try Crossfit," excuse

When you work out a lot, people notice – and when they want advice on what to eat, or how to workout, they ask you. I am not an expert on fitness – I simply know what works for me and what hasn’t worked for me. When co-workers ask me for advice – an especially common occurrence in the month of January – I tell them what has worked – and for me, that “what” is CrossFit and logging my food. The number one response I receive? “I would have to get into shape first before I try CrossFit.”

No. You don’t. In fact, there is only one thing that will prepare you for CrossFit – and that’s CrossFit.

We all start somewhere - it's scary, intimidating and awesome.

So this is for all you people out there trying to get into better shape so you can finally try this workout you always wanted to do, but were too intimidated because you think you aren’t ready. You are.

One of the greatest things about CrossFit is that it is scaleable. Good gyms program workouts for their best athletes – and allow the others to scale appropriately. You have never done a handstand push-up, or a muscle-up or a 24” box jump or double-unders? Awesome – congratulations, you fall into the same category as half the gym! There is no movement where a coach will simply tell you, “Sorry, I guess you just can’t do this workout.” Every movement has a scale – something easier that you can perform, that makes you stronger or faster and will eventually get you there.

When you begin, you may even do workouts where you have to scale every movement. But you won’t be alone! Most gyms offer beginner classes, but even those that don’t – have plenty of new people who will be right there with you. Pregnant women, retirees, people who are 100lbs or more overweight – working out side by side with the fire-breathers.  Most of us who have been doing CrossFit for a few years, remember how intimidating it was to take that first step – and we are right there to cheer you on as you struggle through the workout.

You are using this “I’m not ready for CrossFit” as an excuse, because you are intimidated. You are afraid of stepping outside your comfort zone – but we all know that is where real growth takes place. You aren’t prepared for CrossFit – and that is exactly why you will see such incredible gains from it. Every day is a new personal record or “PR”. Every day you see real, tangible results – new movements learned or conquered, new weights thrown overhead or squatted. You don’t want to be ready for it, because if you were, you wouldn’t see these jumps.

Don't view the people who have been doing CrossFit for a while as intimidating - once you get in the gym, you'll realize these people are the same ones who will be cheering you on through the workout, not shaming you for scaling it.
